I have always loved lace and embroidery but until I gave up work about 15 years ago
never had the opportunity to have a go. I went to a lace class in Farnham, Surrey
run by Denise Watts and she taught me to make lace. We started with bookmarks and
each new bookmark gave me a new challenge to learn. It was an excellent way to start
lace making. When Denise left the area the class was taken over by Sarah Thomas,
I also attended a class run by Chris Prentis. These three teachers gave me a very
good grounding in lace and encouraged me to become adventurous and use colour and
try different techniques.
It is impossible for me to say which lace I like the most. I enjoy making one twelfth
scale lace for dolls houses and I am now learning Binche which is a great challenge.
I think I have settled on Binche, Chantilly, Withof and miniature laces. Still too
many I know but I cannot reduce it any more.
I have found being a member of North Downs Lace Makers a great help as the support
from the other member is exceptional.
